With 40 years experience providing direct services and serving as a national advocate for change, Casey Family Programs is the largest foundation focused solely on improving the lives of children and youth in foster care.
Casey Family Programs' mission is to provide and improve-and ultimately to prevent the need for-foster care. Established by United Parcel Service founder Jim Casey, this Seattle-based national operating foundation has served children, youth, and families in the child welfare system since 1966.
Through no fault of their own, each year approximately 800,000 young people are part of the foster care system in the United States. At any point in time, there are over 500,000 children and youth in foster care-more than double the number two decades ago.
Casey Family Programs operates in two ways:
- Providing direct services and support to youth and families: collaborating with foster, kinship, and adoptive parents to provide safe, loving homes for youth in Casey Family Programs' direct care
- Promoting advances in child welfare practice and policy: collaborating with counties, states, and American Indian and Alaska Native tribes to improve services and outcomes for young people in foster care across the United States
Prevention and Family Support
The goal of Casey Family Programs' Prevention and Family Support team is to reduce the number of children entering foster care.
Prevention and Family Support develops initiatives that teach parents to sustain healthy relationships by enhancing their financial management, advocacy, and leadership skills. It also works to build capacity within community, civic, and faith-based organizations.
Among these initiatives is Powerful Families (originally called Parent-to-Parent). Prevention and Family Support is currently reviewing new initiatives to help child welfare systems work with families. The goal of this work is to keep children in their homes and neighborhoods, and out of the foster care system.
