Powerful Families Pilot Evaluation Final Report (2006)

Powerful Families Pilot Evaluation Final Report
 (2005)

Pilot Results from Powerful Families, formerly known as Parent-to-Parent
 (2004)

Here’s a summary of the results from the program’s pilot phase:

In Spring 2004, 134 parents participated in nine Parent-to-Parent groups conducted by eight partner agencies across four states. Low-income parents told us they faced many challenges:

  • The high cost of living (90 percent)
  • Money problems (81 percent)
  • Low-quality schools for their kids (67 percent)
  • Child behavior problems (67 percent)
  • Lack of affordable housing (67 percent)
  • Social isolation (56 percent)

Most parents with these problems felt that the program helped them deal with or solve them. Parents participating in the program’s Financial Literacy groups saved an average of $154 over nine weeks, and about half felt better able to pay their bills on time.

Nearly 90 percent of parents felt more in control of their family since finishing the program, and 80 percent felt more confident in their parenting. Powerful Families raised parents’ social support and community bonds:  78 percent felt that participating in the program deepened their ties to their community; and 82 percent met other parents with whom they’ll stay in touch.

All but 3 percent of participants said they’d recommend the program to a friend, and 94 percent felt "very satisfied" with the program.

These results came from following the session steps, evaluation design, and timeline, using forms to evaluate the program.
